Dropoetin is a synthetic form of Epoetin Alfa (Erythropoietin) designed to substitute the hormone when it is deficient. Erythropoietin is naturally produced in the body, mainly by the kidneys, and it plays a critical role in regulating the creation of red blood cells that transport oxygen throughout the body. A deficiency of erythropoietin can lead to various types of serious anemia, which results in inadequate oxygen supply to different body parts.
Dropoetin is prescribed for treating anemia in individuals with chronic kidney disease, HIV, or malignant conditions, as well as in cancer patients who develop anemia due to chemotherapy. Additionally, Dropoetin may be utilized to enhance red blood cell production in patients prior to specific surgeries.
Dropoetin is contraindicated in patients with a history or current occurrence of any of the following: hypersensitivity to components of Dropoetin; gout; cardiovascular disease; blood clots; cancer; deficiencies in folic acid, iron, or vitamin B12; kidney disease; bone disorders; inflammation; pure red cell aplasia; infections; stroke; seizures; porphyrin metabolism disorders; breastfeeding; or pregnancy.
Patients should communicate any health issues to their physician. Dropoetin is not recommended for infants. However, it has demonstrated its safety and efficacy in children over the age of 1 month who require dialysis to manage chronic renal failure.
